Storm Emeralda (M6) Review — Is Mega Rayquaza Worth the Most Expensive Box of the Era?
Rayquaza has been doing this to collectors for twenty years. The green one shows up, everybody loses their minds, prices go sideways, and six months later the people who bought at launch are either very pleased with themselves or very quiet about it.
Storm Emeralda landed in Japan on 31 July 2026 as the sixth Mega Evolution set, and it arrived at roughly double the launch price of every M-series set before it. Boxes opened in the ¥23,000–25,000 range against a ¥6,000 shelf price. That's not a typo, and it tells you exactly how much demand there was.
What's actually in it
113 cards — 76 in the main set plus 37 secret rares. Mega Rayquaza ex leads, a Colorless Basic with 280 HP whose attack scales off every Fire and Lightning Energy you have in play, and whose ability pulls energy off the top of your deck the moment it hits the bench. Three more Mega Evolution ex cards round it out: Golisopod, Malamar and Golurk.
The genuinely new thing
Storm Emeralda brings back split Stadium cards, printed as two halves that only work when played together. Anyone who was around for the LEGEND cards of the HeartGold & SoulSilver era will get an immediate hit of recognition. Three pairs in the set — Ocean Trench, Summit and Lava Lake. It's the kind of mechanic that either becomes a beloved oddity or a nightmare for tournament organisers, and honestly it could go either way.
The chase
The Mega Rayquaza ex MUR is the flagship and it has held its price harder than anything else in the set, sitting at ¥300,000–350,000 a week after release while the SAR corrected sharply from its launch spike. That gap is the whole story of a hyped release: the true top-end holds, the second tier finds its real level.
Should you buy the box?
If you want Rayquaza artwork specifically, buy the single. If you want to open something with genuine top-end upside and you're comfortable with the launch premium, the box is the box. And if you're patient, note that Abyss Eye cooled 15–27% after its own launch once supply caught up.
The three-month window
These cards arrive in English as Delta Reign on 6 November 2026. That gap is the reason people buy Japanese: you're holding the next English chase list a quarter early.
